Description
Examines the major psychological theories related to sport and exercise behavior. Topics covered will include the history and development of sport psychology, the personality and motivation of the athlete, arousal and anxiety, social influences, intervention techniques, and counseling/clinical issues that are especially relevant to athletes.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the psychological factors that influence sport and exercise behavior
- Describe the behavioral strategies that can be used to enhance sport and exercise behavior changes (e.g., reinforcement, goal setting, social support, etc.)
- Recognize the historical trends and current research related to sport and exercise psychology
- Describe the specific techniques and counseling approaches that can be used to enhance motivation and prompt attitude change with regard to sport and exercise behaviors
