Description
This course is an examination of race, ethnicity, and gender and how that has shaped Latin American politics and societies from colonial times to the present. Themes include: interactions of Iberian, American, African and Asian peoples; official and unofficial management of multiethnic and multicultural societies; scientific racism; and the relation between theories of race and development of ideas about class, gender, and nation.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge of the distinctive features and the development of the history, institutions, economy, society and culture of Latin America and the Caribbean
- Demonstrate an understanding of factual knowledge about the course of Latin American history, leading to an establishment of a frame of reference
- Demonstrate an understanding and awareness, as well as gain knowledge of how and why race, class and gender have impacted the development and history of this region
