Program Goals

This Associate in Science (A.S.) degree in Education Studies prepares students to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree in childhood or adolescence education. The program integrates SUNY General Education requirements with foundational coursework in liberal arts, human development, and education studies. Graduates will be positioned to transfer into teacher preparation programs with a clear and articulated pathway toward teacher certification.

Students will also receive guidance in meeting the New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements for teacher preparation and will work with advisors to choose appropriate coursework that supports their transfer goals.

Program Learning Outcomes

As a result of this program students will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the goals and mission of the American public education system.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of historical and contemporary issues in education.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of educational theory and practice.
  4. Interpret developmental theories to understand student learning and behavior.
  5. Design basic instructional strategies grounded in inclusive educational practices.
  6. Communicate educational concepts effectively through written and oral means.
  7. Apply foundational liberal arts knowledge toward the achievement of educational competencies.
  8. Apply basic pedagogical concepts and reflect on roles and responsibilities of teachers in diverse learning environments.

General Electives – General electives are intended to help students prepare for transfer into specific teacher certification pathways. Students will work closely with their academic advisor and use program-specific advising check sheets to select electives that align with their intended teachable major and the requirements of their transfer institution.
